Hi there,

Thanks for the feedback, it's much appreciated, and sounds like the right thing to do.

Would you mind sharing a screenshot just so I can show our development team?

Thanks

VM time out

Hi,

We're using a vSphere 5.5 (ESXi 5.5 2718055) cluster with a Nexenta 3.1.5.1 cluster. When we initiate a disk pool fail-over, which takes about 2 minutes for a large pool, our vm's are timed out, because the storage times out during this fail-over period. My question is the following: If I want to allow my virtual machines to stay online, so without rebooting, how do I configure this?

vCenter 5.5 Appliance

Created a Workstation lab similar to the VCP course...I'm using the Vcenter appliance as a standalone vm (meaning its not nested within one of the ESXI hosts.

Question is anyone have an idea on how to increase the size of the console size of the vCenter console?  Using CLI to logon to the vCenter and make adjustments, monitor via vmstat/sar and other tools, the screen is just too small, and I'm pulling my hair out trying to make the display bigger as well as prevent the line from wrapping, a simple vmstat will line wrap, making it difficult to read.  Thanks for any help on this.

I don't know whether it's possible to change the console screen settings. However, instead of using the console window in VMware Workstation, you may instead connect to the vCenter Server Appliance through ssh (e.g. putty).

Indeed great point and thought of that, just looking to avoiding having to install another app in this lab env...Thanks for the input, and at least I feel my question is understandable :-)

FYI putty.exe (~500kB) runs as is, i.e. no installation needed.

Hmmmm... you want to run hypervisor in hypervisor which is not good idea except for tests, even it is possible.

Once you converted successfully this is not the right forum to ask questions.

Installed as you suggested and works much better, thanks for the push!

This seems the correct way to convert your server, (the consistent unfixable error is not good for your file-system at all)

Use secondary IP addresses with Nat configuration (VMNet8)

Hi VMers,

I am using fusion Professional.  I have a firewall that can provide SSL decryption.  I want to decrypt all traffic from Mac OS but not from the guest OS.  I do not want to use bridged interfaces sin I use the guest OS to provide software demonstrations for potential customers.  If I used a bridged interface, the guest IP won't match the customer IP address.

I was hoping to use a secondary IP address on the wireless NIC and have the Mac OS use one IP Address and the Guest OS use the other IP Address.  Unfortunately, I can't figure out how to do this.

Any suggestions would be great!

Thanks,

did you tried to disable the network controller created by vmware workstation. on your host machine and after that see if the issue still persist.

As i can see this service is something which keeps running on the background and keep eating some amount of resource.. Still you can make sure by disabling the network controller under control panel.

Try using the Bridged network. If you have DHCP to provide your mac os a ip then it will generate a own ip for your vm machine too else you can provide a static ip after configuring it to the bridged network.

fusion 7.1.2 linux guest kernel 4.1.0 : hgfs and normal mouse mode fail

Though kernel 4.0.6 works perfectly with vmware tools, kernel 4.1 again fails to compile the hgfs tool.

Also, the mouse handling is broken, so that either the preferences must be set to always optimize mouse for games (which keeps the mouse input limited to either the VM only or the host only). Reverting to kernel 4.0.6 fixes both issues.

Deploying VMware Horizon client for Linux

Does anyone know where (or if) I can dig up proper packages (Deb and RPM) for VMware Horizon client for Linux?

I work in an organisation where Linux popularity is accelerating on all systems, so this is becoming a bit of a big deal.

I managed to get an old version (2.2) from Canonical's partner repositories but it's getting a bit old now. The VMware-provided bundle packages made available are just a royal pain to install and maintain at scale, especially when all the popular Linux distros have a very robust package and repository management built-in. Sysadmins deploying the View client don't want a pretty GUI installer, we want something that can be done at scale.

Also, why is there only x86 support? This is 2015 and almost everything in Linux is x86-64 now because it just works. VMware, please actually put a little effort into the Linux client rather than trying to reinvent software installation processes.

What do other customers do to work around all this? Are better packages available?

Re: Webclient browsing problem with multi-site PSC & VCS implementation

I managed to resolve the problem by myself after making some desperate tries with various things. Now it turns out that this was somehow related to my own AD account because I noticed that any other newly created account doesn't have the same problem. So what I did as a simple blind try was to clone my own account and... voila, my problems with the permissions stopped immediately. I'm absolutely not sure what was happening with my originally created account because my environment is pretty clean including AD itself, but somehow vCenter didn't like my account for whatever reason.

Furthermore I removed my old account and renamed my new one to have literally the same settings as before (including all security group membership assignments), and so far I'm not experiencing the issue anymore. The only thing I'm curious if vCenter or PSC has some sort of bug regarding the creation time of a particular account, but that's not likely to be the case simply because I had no problems with the built-in administrator account. I was able to browse with it the whole vCenter environment without any issues.

Anyway in case you might be experiencing the same problems then perhaps you can first try out creating a brand new account and see if you are experiencing issues with it. If you don't then probably you should also try cloning your own account and check the results against it as well. This certainly helped in my case.

Cheers

Re: how to recover from failure of a USB flash drive with ESXi?

Can I bump this?

I'm running VMware ESXi 5.5 (and 6.0) on my servers off of a SanDisk Cruzer Fit 16GB flash drive. The VMs are stored on a RAID array of internal physical drives on the server.

If that flash drive fails, I'm assuming my system will be inoperable.

Two questions:

  1. How to restore the system to operation assuming the flash drive fails? If I reinstalled ESXi on a new identical thumb drive, would VMware automatically see the already-existing VMs on the server's internal hard drives? Or is the process for discovering the existing VMs relatively painless?
  2. How can I maintain redundancy for my flash drive in case of failure? Can I have two flash drives connected and automatically backup / mirror the first drive to the second?
