hi all gurus:

just like to know if anyone encountered such issue as, the vm network interface got assigned a new MAC address after each reboot of the vm, this would cause the kudzu prompt a new network device detected. the guest OS is a red hat linux. thanks for sharing of experience.

Yeah, they show it as compatible, and it is, as long as you get the 4 x 1Gbps version of the board, and not the 2 x 1Gbps + 2 x 10Gbps version.

I'm sure someone is running around like a chicken with it's head off, trying to get drivers together to make this happen. I hope so, anyway.

I said this in another thread along the same lines, asking about these drivers...

There has been support for Linux for 2 driver releases now. ixgbe 4.0.3 (April 15 release) and now ixgbe 4.1.1 (June 17) - see here. For whatever reason, neither version has made it into a VIB driver package. The most recent VMWare driver is 3.23.21, which is from February.

Not keeping up on the driver releases that support the Intel 10GbE adapter in the Xeon D-1540 SoC kills the product line for visualization, unless you're going with Hyper-V or some variant of Linux (KVM / Xen / etc.)

The NIC driver is the only thing stopping me from deploying the D-1540 in my own cluster. Given that we now have native bandwidth hungry features like VSAN and 4 vCPU Fault Tolerance available to us, 10GbE is pretty much a staple for VMWare now. Have it, or pay the price - only we can't get it because the drivers haven't been updated in 4 months. Where's 4.0.3, at the very least?

REDO log file size with MPIT and without MPIT

as per the vsphere replication architecture whatever the changed block information that is sent by vsphere replication agent are captured by vsphere replication server in the form of redo logs and once the all the blocks are captured then redo logs gets collapsed but in MPIT they are maintaining it. Now my query is what is the size of redo logs in both the cases with MPIT and without MPIT.

Workstation 11 won't load on Kubuntu 15.04 - Failed to build vmnet

Hello,

I'm running Kubunto 15.04 64bit on an Lenovo G5050s laptop with an AMD A10 processor.

VMWare Workstation 11.1.0 on Kernel version 3.19.0-21-generic

Installation Successfull

Launching Workstation prompts with: VMWare Kernel Module Updater Before you can run VMware, several modules must be complied and loaded into the running kernel.

> Install > VMware Kernel Module Updater starts

Stopping VMware Services - checkmark > Compiling: Virtual Network Device - Error indicator > Running depmod - checkmark > Starting VMware Services - Error indicator

New error window: Unable to start services. See log file /tmp/vmware-root/vmware-11713.log for details.

The log is pretty long. I have it available if needed. This error looked significant.  Failed to build vmnet.

Anyone else having a similar issue or have any troubleshooting steps?

I have a friend with me who also has tried installing the same version of workstation on the same version of Kubuntu. He has an HP laptop with an AMD A8 processor. He's getting the same error as well.

Thanks,

Vincent

Re: NUMA memory affinity allocation

Re: NUMA memory affinity allocation

Associate Memory Allocations with a NUMA Node in the vSphere Client You can specify that all future memory allocations on a virtual machine use pages associated with a single NUMA node (also known as manual memory affinity). When the virtual machine uses local memory, the performance improves on that virtual machine. The following conditions apply to memory optimization with NUMA:

■ The NUMA option is available on the Advanced Memory Resources page only if the host uses NUMA memory architecture.

■ Affinity settings are meaningful only when used to modify the performance of a specific set of virtual machines on one host. This option is not available when the virtual machine resides on a DRS cluster. All affinity values are cleared when you move the virtual machine to a new host.

You can specify nodes to use for future memory allocations only if you have also specified CPU affinity. If you make manual changes only to the memory affinity settings, automatic NUMA rebalancing does not work properly.

■ Checking all the boxes is the same as applying no affinity.

Third bullet point is giving you an idea why it might not be working properly.

Setting up only memory affinity to NUMA node will still allow you to do vMotion and if you move VM from one host to another, those settings are not going to be valid any more. so make sure that you do CPU affinity settings also. See if this helps.

Re: how to recover from failure of a USB flash drive with ESXi?

  1. How to restore the system to operation assuming the flash drive fails? If I reinstalled ESXi on a new identical thumb drive, would VMware automatically see the already-existing VMs on the server's internal hard drives? Or is the process for discovering the existing VMs relatively painless?

If your flash drive fails, won't be a trouble as you have your VMs safe on separate datastore in locally attached storage drives. all you got to do is reinstall ESXi host, it will be happy to see existing VMFS datastore and browse that datastore where your VMs are stored, and re-reigster them in inventory.

also see following KB to do configuration backup of your ESXi OS as and when you make configuration changes so at the time of ESXi failure, you don't have to worry about re-configuarting it

VMware KB: Backing up and restoring ESXi configuration using the vSphere Command-Line Interface and vSphere PowerCLI

  1. How can I maintain redundancy for my flash drive in case of failure? Can I have two flash drives connected and automatically backup / mirror the first drive to the second?

this might not be possible (I have never tried it myself) if you are using external flash drive, but let's say you have hardware from specific vendor giving that functionality like

DELL IDSDM http://www.dell.com/downloads/global/products/pedge/en/poweredge-idsdm-whitepaper-en.pdf

or any other vendor giving similar functionality then it's quite possible to mirror it. Otherwise best option is take config. backup using KB I have mentioned in first answer.

Hi, there is no issue in your lab environment as this is the normal behavior. Once Software iscsi adapter is mapped with your vmkernel port then automatically it will be selected but again from the vmkernel port properties you cannot select-deselect this.

Horizon for Linux does not support HTML Access client yet. So far, Horizon for Linux is unmanaged VM with limited support on auto provisioning. There are some sample PowerCLI scripts to help the automation, please check here Documentation Center for Horizon 6 version 6.1
