Re: Ways Replicate to two locations

$

You can use RP to mirror your VM datastores to multiple locations, you just can't use SRM to protect VMs being replicated to multiple locations. SRM can only protect a single VM replication. To be clear you can use SRM to protect one replication and still have others.

Other companies do replicate their datastores to two or more locations and use SRM as I outlined above.

SRM is licensed per protected VM. The storage used doesn't matter for SRM licensing.

Re: vCenter Server 5.5 fails to start after server reboot

For those that haven't used the SQL Express install, the dependencies of VMware VirtualCenter Server shouldn't include it ... because it won't have been installed.

If it's set as a dependency but not present on the server then the vCenter service won't start.

Hence the command for the dependencies should be:

sc.exe config vpxd depend= ProtectedStorage/lanmanworkstation/VMwareSTS

Cheers.

vSphere update sequence and VDP

vSphere supported upgrade sequence states that VDP needs to be upgraded after vCenter.  Does VMware not support upgrades if your running VDP 6 on vCenter 5.5 and then you need to upgrade vCenter?

http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=2109760

I can say from experience that in our lab we had vCenter 5.5 U2 and VDP 5.8.  We upgraded vCenter to 6.0 before upgrading VDP to 6 and ran into issues.  I had to switch SSO from vCenter to PSC and re-register the web plugin.  I haven't done any vCenter 5.5 - VDP 6 upgrades yet but I suspect similar results.  I have a lot of customers wanting to take advantage of the now free features of VDPA in VDP 6 but not upgrade vCenter to version 6 until update 1.  Would it be considered better to build new vCenter instead of upgrade if VDP 6 is being used with vCenter 5.5?

I have increased the size of my virtual disk from 40 to 200GB. This is ext 4 on CentOS 6.6.

I'm running

fdisk -l

and I get this:

Then I run

fdisk /dev/sda

and select

"n" then

"p"

to create a new primary partition.  Then I get the message "No free sectors available".

This happens even though linux can see my virtual disk has been expanded to  200GB.

Why can't I create a new primary partition?

Thanks!

State of the system registry of the guest OS if it is reset while being in sleep mode?

I'm running tests when the guest OS (Windows 7) was previously suspended (or, put into Sleep mode) and then if it suddenly loses power (without going out from suspension.)

I'm testing it using a VMWare Workstation 10 and the "Reset" option:

dGiYc.png

And what I am observing is somewhat strange. For instance, when I place some data into system registry before the OS is suspended, and then check that same registry key after the system is booted back up (after the power reset) my data in the system registry seems to be missing. Or the value of the key is just not there. While my parallel log (which is saved just in a text file) has everything saved correctly.

So I'm curious if this is a bug in the VMWare software? And if not, then why is it happening? (Note that this behavior doesn't happen all the time. Most times it reloads correctly.)

PS. To ensure that the guest OS can wake from sleep on timer, I enabled the following VMware setting:

chipset.onlineStandby = "TRUE"

Looks like we have a fix under test.

Thanks ralish for the link to MS article detailing the manifest issue it definitely helped track down our manifest code.

Thanks again!

yes that's fine but the blue print us more recent than the deployment profile. instesd of quick deploy go into the application and go through the deployment profile manually at the end save it or deploy it. after that quick deploy will work.

Hello Tony,

Welcome at the VMware Communities forum.

As that was your first post and as you are not mentioning you had this problem yourself, please note that the issue only occurs with Windows Service Pack 2 (SP2) and earlier. If your Windows XP is running Service Pack 3 - the latest SP - then you should be fine.

I SSH'ed into the ESX console and checked both my .vmx files for the two virtual machines.  They are different.
