Ubuntu 14.04 not seeing entire VM disk

$

Hello,

My ubuntu 14.04 VM isn't seeing the entire disk for some reason. If I go into the "virtual Machine Settings" and go to the disk, here's what it says:

Capacity

Current size: 3.9 GB

System free: 373.2 GB

Maximum size: 20 GB

But when I go into ubuntu and look in the system monitor, it says that I have a total of 4.2 GB, used 3.7GB and only have 207.5MB free.

This clearly isn't right. What's going on? This basically means my VM is unusable for all intents and purposes.

My host OS is Windows 10.

Thanks

I have a problem with Workstation 12.5 or 12.5.1 on my pc.

I installed a fresh installation of Windows 10 Pro x64 1607 on my Dell Optiplex 3010.

The installation of vmware workstation 12.5.1 terminated without problem but when I start the application I receive an error.

Apps from application pools - automatically create shortcuts on the desktop

Is there a way to push application shortcuts on the client desktop upon first login ?

To cklick on every application avaliable and select create shortcut on desktop is cumbersome for users. I know that I can manually crate icons trough GPO but this is less than ideal.

eval equivalent in powercli

Hello I have multiple DVS in my vcenter. Depending on the datacenter of a VM, I want to attach that VM's interfaces to one of the DVS.

$OAK =  get-view (get-VDSwitch -Name "OAK")

$OAK.Portgroup | %{Get-View -Id $_ } | %{

$hash.add($_.Name,$_.Key)

}

PowerCLI C:\> $dc = Get-Datacenter -vm A1-T1-9-d10-1

PowerCLI C:\> $dc.name

OAK

PowerCLI C:\>

I want to access $OAK based on the $dc.name (something like 'eval \$($dc.name)' in shell ?)  i,e the value of a variable is another variable and how to dereference it ?

Ah ok. Security groups are not supported in VDS mode.

Thanks Richardson; I think I can make either of those options work. I wonder, though, what VMware best practice is? I still haven't found other reference to this yet in the docs...you'd think this would be the scenario every time somebody created a VSAN, and therefore there'd be some official documentation about it!

Check inside the guest using fdisk or gdisk.
Both tools will very likely tell you that you have a disk with a size of 20Gb.
Probably you will have a 4gb partition /dev/sda1 plus a small swap partition of maybe 200 MB.
Either create a new partition using the free space or expand the / - partition.

Ok, looks like both Richardson and myself are correct. I finally found the documentation (it's dated 2014). Pages 54-57 of this document explain it, so I'm imagining this is VMware's "official" stand on the matter.

The choices they present are:

1. As I mentioned, create a vsan on one host from the CLI and install the vCenter environment on it, and then spin up the other hosts and extend the VSAN.

2. As Richardson mentioned, use local storage on the first host to spin up the vCenter environment, then spin up the other hosts, create a vsan, migrate the vCenter servers to the vsan, and then clean up the first host and then add it to the cluster.

Ok, guess my question is answered!

How to get exact OS information incl. Edition from vmware (vimclient, powerCLI)

Hi!

Just registered to ask a simple question

I have some old code laying around which extracts some vm-information using vb.net (vimclient) and puts this data to another database. Works fine for years.

Now my boss asks me to get an info about the used operating system on the guest machines. No problem, got that already (sorry, old vb-code):

--snip--

.GuestOS = vm.Summary.Guest.GuestFullName

                    If vm.Summary.Guest.GuestFullName = "" Then .GuestOS = vm.Config.GuestFullName

--snip--

This works fine til 'Windows Server 2008' or 'Windows 10'. These Operating Systems are reported, but it's 'Edition', e.g. Professional or Enterprise is missing.

So, this is the output of my VM: 'Microsoft Windows 10 (64-Bit)' But it is Windows 10 Enterprise. Same with Windows Server 2008 or 2012.

Question is how to get that edition from vmware? Im using vimclient v5.5. Maybe I should use v6.x? but don't think it will help?!

Thanks for your support!

Regards,

Jan

Привет.

У вас есть Windows 2008R2 Standard или Enterprise?

В Windows 2008R2 Standard может работать только 4 CPU независимо от того,кто установил 5 или больше CPU

Hi Tracy,

I can confirm that after installing the 12.5.1 update for Workstation Pro that the 7za.exe is now showing as version 16.02. This version is not vulnerable to the issues I mentioned in this thread.

Many thanks for your excellent work on having this update include this fix. Have a great day

Hi!

I am also experiencing the same on my end.

Were you able to fix this issue? If yes, how did you fix it?

Thanks.

Horizon client on windows - handling lock/logout/... events

Currently we have thin clients which are domain joined and when the user log in it is then automatically logged into virtual desktop.

Is it possible to configure Horizon client in a way that when you do logout from VDI that you are also logged out from TC ? And similar if user locks VDI trough start menu that the client also locks ?

What is otherwise the best option to configure Windows thin clients to work seamlessly with horizon and without any local desktop ? Especially when users are using ctr-alt-del key combination or doing lock/logoff. Zero clients are really nice here and give you the best local desktop experience, but they lack on other areas.

Tnx

Re: Will storage vmotion work while moving VMs from ESXi 5.0 datastore cluster to new ESXi 6.0 hosts datastore cluster : without powering off the VMs ?

Thank you, i would try it by having both ESXi 5.0 and ESXi 6.0 hosts in my Vcenter environment.

ESXi 6 create datastore as a striped device?

I have a datastore I want to create from multiple source luns. Each of the luns is from an SSD storage array, using 6G speed, which allos up to 600MB/sec per lun throughput.

When I try to create the datastore, it seems to concatenate the luns together rather than striping them for improved performance.

The application needs to support 2GB/sec, meaning I need to create a stripe accross 8 of these luns in order to achieve that performance, however, the datastore doesn't seem to allow striping.

Is there a way to fix this so that I can get the necessary performance throughput?

You cannot change the virtual machine's storage placement and its execution host at the same time on this "Source" host

Hello,

Please i have a problem to do a vMotion from host "Rack" (ESXI 5.0, VM version 8, VMFS 5.54) to LAME BLASE server (ESXI 6.0, VM version 11, VMFS 5.61). I added the Rack host to the vCenter and tried to migrate a VM test but got the error message:

The virtual machine requires hardware features that are unsupported or disabled on the target host: """""""""""""* General incompatibilities "
If possible, use a cluster with Enhanced vMotion Compatibility (EVC) enabled; see KB article 1003212.
CPUID details: incompatibility at level 0x1 register 'ecx'.
Host bits: 0110:0010:1101:1000:0011:0010:0000:0011
Required: x000:x01x:10x1:1xx0:xx10:xx1x:xx0x:xx11

It seems incompatible VM hardware, as solution we need to download and install the right VM harware to perform the migration, i'm investigate this issue.

It was a CPU problem version, i enabled the EVC by adding the source host to a new cluster with EVC enabled https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DSfzafr1ndA an now i don't have the above error message but another error message:

You cannot change the virtual machine's storage placement and its execution host at the same time on this "Source" host 'xxx.yyy.zzz.www'.

I tried to do only storage vMotion or resource vMotion but i see only the source host not the destination host !

Can someone helps me please !

Regards.
